Hey there! How has everyone been doing this week? This week I have been super productive so far at the time of writing this (Tuesday). I have started to get into the swing of things and started to organize my own life which I am loving. How about you guys? Did you guys have a productive week?
Something that I have gone back and forth about is dress codes in the workplace. Now, I work remotely (and honestly, not sure if I will ever work in an office again). Working remotely has allowed me to dress down in my normal attire (black t-shirt, black jeans, and black vans XD). Granted my normal attire isn't something outrageous, but it is also not what my parents wore when they started to go to work.
Something that I have gone back and forth with people about though is if a work dress code is necessary. I'm not talking about a dress code that states you can't show up in something you would wear to a club (which honestly….is still my attire haha). I'm talking about the individuals whose companies ask you to wear a shirt and tie all day every day. I don't think a dress code like that is necessary and it is something I think about when I was applying for jobs. I would avoid companies and individuals that forced that kind of mentality.
I understand that in some places that may be necessary depending on the profession. I don't know if I go into a doctor's office and they are wearing a band t-shirt that I would feel the most comfortable, but then also I'm not sure why I would think that way. I even understand for some individuals that may be what they need to dress up to feel like they are at work. There is something to the dress good, feel good. But the question I have is why people think it is necessary for everything.
For example, if I work in IT for a bank, why do I need to be dressed up? I'm not customer-facing and even if I was, the customer would know that I'm not the one in charge of their money. Is the dress code necessary? For me, I think I'm a hard worker and honestly a dress code does not make me work any harder. In some cases, it makes me work less because I just want to speed up to get out of the dress code haha I hate dressing up if you haven't figured that out yet haha
I think that it depends on the person at the end of the day on how they perform and what works for them. If I was running a place, I would say that the goal should make the employee feel as comfortable as they can which is reasonable. If you make the employee feel comfortable it can lead to them working harder.
How about you? Do you think dress codes should be enforced? Do you also prefer dressing up for work? Let me know!
