Hey there! Long time no newsletter! Every time I think I have a good cadence of this content creation life, something happens in my life that throws me off the loop, and then this falls because of it. I THINK (I’m going to stop making promises, haha) I should be back on the bi-weekly cadence, but only time will tell. Check back in two weeks to see if I send another issue, haha.
Hope you guys have been good during this time. I can’t believe we are already in March! Last week was Spring Break at the university I teach at, and it is so surprising how fast time flies. Maybe it is because I’m getting old, and life seems to be flying by. I hope the beginning of the year has been going well for you, and you have been reaching your goals!
Announcing Releases to Early
Something that has been weighing on me a bit is this kind of routine that tech companies seem to do. I have noticed more and more the last couple of years that tech companies seem to announce all these products, mainly software, that are months away from being released and aren’t even close to ready but talk about them like they are in the final stages of development. The most recent culprit is Apple, but they all seem to do it. How do you guys feel about that? Personally, it is starting to get super annoying to me. It feels like unnecessary promises are being said to us that don’t need to be said. It especially gets bad for when they make advertisements based on these promises for future promises. Expectations are brought up and then when you don’t reach the expectations, then you have individuals that are upset.
Apple recently said that they are delaying some of the Apple Intelligence features that they have been touting for months that are supposed to come out with the latest version of iOS when it is released, iOS 18.4 (article down below). The rumors of the work that is happening behind the glass doors is that they aren’t even close to being ready and that there are tons of issues that need to be resolved for them. Some have even said that they might have to rework a large majority of it. My question when I hear that is that this didn’t happen just overnight. You knew months ago that you were super behind. This was announced in June last year! My question is if you knew that you were at minimum 9 months away, why even announce it? Why not wait? In this specific case, they could have just announced the things that they knew that were ready like the writing tools.
Personally, I think the reason behind it is competition, but I don’t think that is a good reason in all honesty. I think companies see other companies doing certain things and when they are beaten to market, they feel like they have to show what they are working on and make these promises so users don’t switch. Now I am not a business person at all, but for some of these organizations, I can’t imagine that their core fans would really do it. For example, I can’t imagine if Samsung, Apple, or Google didn’t beat a certain feature to market, that the majority of their user base will just leave. I am certain that some of course will, but I am not sure about the majority. Now if you are just never bringing new things to market, yeah, you are in trouble, but that is not what I am referring to. I am referring to the situations where you have a bunch of features coming out and you have to hold back a couple until the next major release.
I think companies should start doing this because I think it really is starting to do more harm than good to a lot of them. Apple included.
